The chart says “multiple drug allergies.” The patient says the reactions never quite made sense — different drugs, different classes, the same rash. When the actives don’t explain the pattern, the excipients might: the same dye, binder, or preservative can thread through otherwise unrelated products, and it can enter or leave the picture with a manufacturer switch the patient never knew about. Animals metabolize differently, and the excipient that’s harmless in your hand can be the problem in the exam room — xylitol, safe in a human tablet, is famously dangerous to dogs. Veterinary practice lives with this every day: human-labeled products dispensed under extra-label use, species sensitivities the label never anticipated, and compounding requests built around what an animal can’t tolerate.
